Delivery Methods
- Classroom Learning
Many courses are offered in a traditional classroom/lab setting. The actual location will be local (in Sault Ste. Marie) and will be listed with each course.
- Independent Study
With this learning method, you can start anytime. Upon registration, a facilitator will be assigned to you for the duration of your course. This mode of learning is truly independent and requires that you be very self-motivated and disciplined.
- Online Learning
Online learning is offered through OntarioLearn - a consortium of 24 colleges in Ontario that have joined together to offer online courses in a way that promotes convenience, quality and variety. We offer many programs that can be completed entirely online, including certificates, graduate certificates, and diploma programs. These courses and programs have multiple start dates throughout the year, providing flexibility to achieve your education goals. Trail Fit Bootcamp

Get moving outdoors in this energizing 5-week Trail Fit Bootcamp at Hiawatha Highlands! This beginner-friendly program combines trail walking or jogging with bodyweight strength exercises designed to improve endurance, balance, and overall fitness. Each session makes use of the natural terrain for hill climbs, interval training, and functional strength movements. Participants will enjoy fresh air, supportive group motivation, and a fun way to build fitness while exploring local trails. No prior trail running experience required – just a willingness to move and enjoy the outdoors.
Note:
- For an extra challenge, you are encouraged to bring hand/ankle weights or resistance bands to incorporate into the course.
- Participants should dress for comfort, movement, and changing outdoor conditions. Recommended items include trail running shoes or running shoes with good traction, weather-appropriate athletic clothing, a water bottle/hydration pack.

Outdoor Living
First Flight: Guided Bird Walk

Fly high and take it outside. Through hands-on lessons, real bird calls, and visual guides, you’ll build the kind of skills that hold up out in the field. Spread your wings and start your birding journey. You’ll learn how to:
- Use field guides and common gear without fumbling around
- Watch birds the right way - ethical, low-impact, and respectful
- Keep solid field notes and document what you’re seeing
- Become familiar with local sightings and identify similar species apart
- Read bird behaviour and understand what’s going on around you
We’ll also get you plugged into citizen science platforms like eBird and iNaturalist, so your sightings can contribute to real conservation and research, not just your camera roll. By the end, you’ll be confidently calling out common birds and building the kind of skills that keep getting better every time you head outside.

Wild Edibles and Foraging: Find It. Know It. Eat It.

This hands-on introduction to foraging will teach you how to spot, identify, and harvest wild edibles across Northern Ontario’s forests, shorelines, and wetlands. You’ll learn how to do it safely, sustainably, and with confidence. Take out the guesswork and apply real skills you can take back into the bush. You’ll learn:
- How to safely identify common wild edibles and avoid dangerous look-alikes
- Foraging etiquette: confident positive ID, ethical harvesting, and where not to forage

M2 Exit

This course is designed for the experienced street motorcyclist who wants to make the most of his/her riding skills. Included in the course is a three-hour classroom session and seven hours of practical training, which emphasizes road management skills. You must bring your own motorcycle. Upon completion of the practical training, you will be tested for the ‘M’ Class license. After you have successfully passed the Ðǿմ«Ã½ course, the Ministry of Transportation requires no further testing.
Requirements:
In order to participate in the M2 Exit course, riders must supply a road-worthy motorcycle and have in their possession valid motorcycle registration, motorcycle insurance, and M2 license. Please come to the first class with riding gear, as instructed in the information package. Those without proper riding gear will not be permitted to attend the course.

Maximum 5 participants per instructor. An information package will be given out upon registration.

Motorcycle Training: Basic (Gearing Up Program)

Certified instructors deliver Ðǿմ«Ã½â€™s Motorcycle Training Program. The program is 18 hours long, with three hours in-class and fifteen hours on-bike. Motorcycles are provided. Upon successful completion, you will be eligible to receive your M2 license without further testing. For more information, .

You must have an M1 learner permit prior to starting the course.
Requirements:
Come prepared with approved helmet, heavy jacket, leather gloves, heavy pants, and boots that cover the ankle.
Notes:
An information package will be available upon registration.
Weekend classes are held for three days and weekday classes are held for four evenings to allow for the required number of course hours.

RPAS - Remote Piloted Aircraft System

Prepare to write your Advanced Transport Canada exam! This prep RPAS course is designed to educate those with no prior aviation background in the safe and legal operation of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems, between 250g up to and including 25 kg. Operating within Visual Line of Sight (VLOS). This course will prepare students for the Transport Canada RPAS exam for Advanced categories. Students will be taught the knowledge requirements of airmanship and safety in accordance with Transport Canada`s requirements (current document TP 15263 E). Following this prep course, you will need to write the Transport Canada Exam and undergo practical testing by a Transport Canada Qualified Flight Reviewer.

N95 Mask Fit Testing

Do you work in a healthcare environment? Do you need to be fitted for your mask? The N95 Mask Fit Testing is available in 15 minute blocks on the specified dates below.
Requirements to be tested:
- No smoking at least 30 minutes prior to the fitting
- No gum chewing at least 30 minutes prior to the fitting
- No eating or drinking at least 30 minutes prior to the fitting
- Per the Occupational Health and Safety regulations for Ontario, it states under the rules for mask fit testing that the participant MUST be clean shaven (no facial hair) for a valid fit test.
- If you are unable to be clean shaven (no facial hair), attend your appointment with a beard cover or speak with your Program Support Assistant or Academic Assistant prior to registering.
Note:
- Upon registration, you will receive a specific time for your test. Please arrive on-time at Ðǿմ«Ã½'s Continuing Education Office (A1150). If you are late or do not show, there are no refunds.

Standard First Aid/BLS C/AED

In this comprehensive course, participants will learn how to recognize the signs of heart attack, stroke, and choking emergencies, as well as how to treat respiratory emergencies and use barrier devices like the bag-valve mask (BVM) on adult, child, and pediatric patients. This course teaches the participant how to approach and manage medical emergencies and provide care to the patient until EMS arrives.
This course is required for workplaces employing six or more workers in any one shift at a work area or those interested in gaining enhanced first aid knowledge and skills as required by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board under which Second Chance CPR is an approved provider for First Aid programs (WSIB Reg. 1101). This course is also utilized by health care professionals and students entering classes in the Health Care Field (Nursing, Police, Firefighting, Dental Assistants, and Health Care Workers). All courses include an Emergency Action Guide (First Aid Booklet), wallet cards, and printed wall certificates.
- Note: You must attend 100% of the classes as per the Canadian First Aid Education Guidelines. As per this requirement, if you arrive late, you will not be permitted into the course. If you are late or do not show, there are no refunds.
